The grinding of the wheels and the slapping of skate decks to concrete brings me back to the “good old days”. You know the days when you were carefree, when you weren’t concerned with home-insurance, baby-sitters, and the responsibilities that come with, you know, being an adult? But as I sit on the curb, reminiscing about my 16 year old self that spent many a nights on this very concrete, I take notice of something. I FEEL different sitting here, different in my skin, different in my outlook, different than my 16 yr old self felt sitting here. I feel comfortable, I feel happy, I feel non-judgemental, and non-judged…I feel CAREFREE. And I realize those “good old days” carried worries of their own that are now a thing of the past. The teenage awkwardness, the insecurity, the mental energy it took to try and be cool….all exhausting…and I became thankful for our 30-something selves that were gathered for some skate-park nostalgia that night. For friendships that went deep and for understanding and acceptance that went wide. Maybe growing up isn’t that bad.
